How does the PSS mechanical seal work and why it is the number one selling marine seal in the world?

The mechanical seal is created between the flat mirrored surfaces of a rotating stainless steel rotor attached to the propeller shaft and the stationary carbon/graphite flange attached to the stern tube of the propeller bracket.

The contact is guaranteed by the compression coming from preloaded rubber bellows and by the water pressure, which creates a uniform “film” between the stainless steel ring and the carbon/graphite flange.

This layer of water eliminates any friction between the surfaces and forms a perfect watertight seal.
This type of seal is insensitive to movement and vibrations in the shaft line.

The result is a completely watertight seal that does not require any maintenance.
The simple design of the PSS mechanical seal is an added guarantee.
